WORLD BEAT collection is a group of
sixteen Caribbean inspired “fresh and funky critters.” infused
with color and craziness on black backgrounds. These forms were
originally hand painted on silk using the French Serti technique in
tableaus around a central “Lizard” figure on one 45 X 45 center
panel and two 22 X 44 side panels. The individual panels have been
separated and re-produced as open edition print details and
vignettes.
The World Beat collection is a zany and fun depiction of Belizean
and Mayan symbols that come from a seemingly child-like place in the
head of the artist, but originate in Belize’s African, Kriole,
Garifuna, Mayan and Mestizo heritage. The playfulness of the pieces
should not distract the viewer from that fact that it is the
purposeful technique of the artist to use contrast and vibrant
presentation, and impressions using color layering to pull the eye
of the on-looker in one way or another.
The World Beat collection is a successful attempt to capture the
real and mythical creatures of Belize. The feeling one gets upon
first sighting a World Beat creature is reminiscent of the that
electric shock and surprise we felt as a child making a new
discovery that Kroll hopes to evoke in the adult. That clarity of
thought, the stark reality of God’s creatures in nature, that is
the wonderment of the Caribbean environment that is so precious
about Belize. Kroll tells it to the world in World Beat. The
Caribbean Colors are not just something that exists in travel
brochures or television but this is a fragile fact of nature in the
Caribbean. These are a global treasure that survive day to day here
in the tropics.
